Plastic Water Pipe Locating

Plastic Water Pipe Locating in the Greater Seattle Area

Locate buried poly, PE, and other non-metallic water lines that standard locators can't see.

RF utility locators rely on conductive metal or a tracer wire to find buried pipe. Polyethylene, PEX, and other plastic water lines often have neither, so they cannot be traced with RF. Simply Leak Detection specializes in locating non-metallic water pipe across the Greater Seattle Area using acoustic methods and specialized locating equipment so the line can be found before anyone digs.

Plastic Water Pipe Locating

Why plastic pipe is hard to locate

Plastic is non-conductive, so RF utility locators have nothing to follow unless a tracer wire was installed. Most plastic lines do not have tracer wire; without it, the line cannot be traced with RF and must be located acoustically.

That's a real problem when the line needs to be exposed for a repair, a property improvement, or a connection to new infrastructure. Digging blind is expensive and risky.

How we locate non-metallic water lines

We locate plastic lines acoustically, using controlled mechanical signals to map their route. For lines large enough to admit a sonde, we can push a transmitter through and locate it from above.

The output is a clearly marked line on the surface that the dig crew can trust.

When to call for plastic-line locating

Before any excavation near suspected plastic water service lines, when 811 marks have come back incomplete because the water line is owned by the property owner and not the water provider, or when an existing tracer wire is dead.

What we look for
  • Buried plastic/PE water service lines without tracer wire
  • Black poly and PVC irrigation mains
  • Non-metallic commercial service lines
  • Tracer wires that have corroded or been severed
How we do it
  1. Isolate the line at the meter or manifold
  2. Locate the line acoustically with controlled mechanical signals
  3. Mark the route and deliver a written summary included with the invoice
